Event Description

Hating Obamacare is not enough. It is becoming more entrenched every day, and is a huge threat to our state and our country. Please help me spread the word and push back by sending out the following.

Update: The current pressure for a Health Care Exchange in MI is coming from major insurance like BCBS, and Governor Snyder. Our conservative legislators need us to keep their backs. There's not much we can do about corporations, but we can let the governor feel the heat!

Action: Please sound off! Call weekly until this thing is dead.
Contact information for Gov. Snyder: 517-3737-3400

Suggested talking points:
An Exchange enables Obamacare down the road.
Healthcare is a service, not a right!
Centralized control of healthcare has already proven costly and ineffective.
Free market, decentralized solutions are available and should be implemented.
-remove state line barriers to competition in health insurance
-remove competition barriers like Certificate of Need requirements
-tort reform to decrease costs from lawsuit abuse and malpractice insurance
-privatize and/or spin down state medicaid and welfare programs
-deregulate to decrease provider costs
-reduce reliance on 3rd party payers by promoting HSA's, direct pay, and transparent pricing
10th Amendment: Healthcare is not a power granted to the Federal government by the Constitution. That means it's reserved to the states and the people. It's time for us to push back!

MI Attorney General Bill Schuette signed onto the Obamacare lawsuit, but has been conspicuously silent ever since. Contact: 517-373-1110 or

When is the meeting?

And I wonder why they're only asking your senator to explain his vote.  Plenty of other Republican senators cast a bad vote on this one.

OK, I don't know if we've been making too much fuss, or not enough. My senator has been called back to home base (GOP Co meeting) to explain his bad vote on this. The bad news? They want me there. To debate him apparently.....looking for backup! Lots of prayer, please.

Awesome Abby!

Thanks for the info, Pattie! I was able to stop in by Tom Hooker today, and he was happy to talk and hear my concerns. He wrote down the bill numbers of the Exchange (693) and Appropriations (5014). He thought he had opposed the 2nd one, but when I got home and checked, he hadn't. So I hope he checked it and is re-thinking his original vote, because this one is even worse after it got back from the Senate---$9.8 Million for setting up an Exchange in MI!

I expected the Dems to vote "yes", but I had really hoped for more "nos" from the red side of the aisle.  Hopefully, the House will kill this thing.

I checked the State website and this bill has been referred to the House Committee on Health Policy.  Gail Haines is the committee chair.  Names of other committee members can be found here:

Health Policy Committee

Tom Hooker and Ken Yonker are both on this committee.

Ken Yonker is having a town hall meeting on Tuesday, November 29 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Caledonia Public Library.  People who prefer to air their concerns face to face could do so at this time.

Tom Hooker has in district office hours on November 14 and 28 from 2-4 p.m. at Byron Family Restaurant,  2527 84th St. SW in Byron Center.

He also has district office hours on November 21 from 4-6 p.m. at the Wyoming Public Library,  3350 Michael Avenue Southwest in Wyoming.

Yes, the MI Senate has a hearing problem! It's time to contact yours about how you feel. Take a look at the final Roll Call On Snydercare:
IN FAVOR (D): Anderson, Bieda, Gleason, Gregory, Hood, Hopgood, Hunter, Johnson, Smith, Warren, Whitmer, Young
  (R) Booher, Caswell, Emmons, Green, Hansen, Hildenbrand, Jansen, Jones, Kahn, Marleau, Meekhof, Pappageorge, Richardville
AGAINST: (D) none
  (R) Brandenburg, Casperson, Colbeck, Hune, Kowall, Moolenaar, Nofs, Proos, Robertson, Rocca, Schuitmaker, Walker

The Republicans who voted for this fiasco have been giving lots of creative excuses, spouting the necessity and good sense of doing so. Everything I've heard from them so far is debunked by this article,

and the following summary of the Obamacare bill, PPACA.

We need to be very clear on this issue. There will be one exchange, a federal exchange. Michigan will not be free of federal intervention and will be more targetted after taking the federal funding. The Senate just set up the ObamaCare high speed rail between DC and Michigan, thinking they get to control the traffic. "Each State electing to establish an Exchange must adopt the Federal standards contained in this law and in this proposed rule, or have in effect a State law or regulation that implements these Federal standards. Section 1311(k) further specifies that Exchanges may not establish rules that conflict with or prevent the application of regulations promulgated by the Secretary."

Please write your Senators and your local paper to praise or blame, and then start on your Rep to stiffen his backbone!
