2012 MICHIGAN SENATORIAL CANDIDATE QUESTIONS
I. Constitutional Duties.
What is your understanding of your prescribed constitutional role and duty as a US Senator? Please elaborate.
A United States Senator has a profound, but limited role, in our constitutional republic. Article I of the United States Constitution vests Congress with the legislative (i.e., lawmaking) power. A United States Senator is one of 100 elected officials in one of two legislative chambers of the United States Congress. Pursuant to Article 1 of the Constitution, Congress, not the President or the Supreme Court, is the lawmaker for the federal government. However, Congressional power is limited to the express enumerated powers in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. The 9th and 10th Amendments ensure that all powers not expressly provided to Congress are reserved to the States and the people.
